Agate is a so-called layered stone

Locations / Origin

Until the early 19th century, the most important deposits were in the area around Idar-Oberstein/Rhenish Palatinate. Today they are exhausted. In the Bible, in Exodus 28:17–20, the high priest’s breastplate—a plate set with gemstones—is described in detail. Agate amulets were meant to help against lightning, storms and thirst.

Agate is particularly common in volcanic landscapes. In the Americas: Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay; in Asia especially Yemen, Mongolia, China, the Ural Mountains; and in Europe mainly Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy in Sicily and near Vicenza (Monte Tondo). Africa as a source is not excluded; it occurs there too.

Ideology

Official gemstone lore states that agate can be helpful for all eye conditions such as inflammation, irritation, glaucoma, eye fatigue, and dry, burning eyes. It is said to help with rashes, skin disorders, bruises, burns, insect bites, itching, eczema, varicose veins, open legs and blistering. It is also said to help with: intestinal complaints, flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach complaints, loss of appetite, liver complaints, cystitis, bladder complaints, incontinence, kidney stones, kidney inflammation, asthma, hay fever, allergies, colds, flu (fever-reducing), circulatory disorders, cold hands and feet, disorders of the nervous system, epilepsy, rheumatism, joint swelling, bone fractures, back pain, weather sensitivity after injuries, physical exhaustion, growth disorders, tendon sheath inflammation, connective tissue weakness, pain in general, hormonal disorders, underactive thyroid; it is said to be good pregnancy protection and to support the reproductive organs.

Traditions say that agate is also said to have wonderful emotional qualities, and it is used for: nightmares, homesickness, sleep disorders, need for protection, doubts, depression, emotional pain, inner tension, stress, bitterness, aggression, distraction; and it promotes self-confidence, perseverance, retreat, stamina, perceptiveness, creativity, protection, security, logical thinking, accuracy, ability to concentrate, protects against negative influences, is an expression of emotions, promotes a positive attitude towards the body, supports joy, trust, optimism, light-heartedness, courage, inner stability, inner calm, processing experiences, mental maturity, tolerance, memory.
