History of Blue Goldstone
Blue Goldstone, also known as artificially colored glass, has an interesting origin and history. It’s important to note that Blue Goldstone is not a natural mineral or rock, but a colored glass product. It consists of glass and metal oxides such as manganese and cobalt, which serve as coloring components and create the metallic shimmer. The glass itself is made from quartz sand, boron, soda, and lead to increase hardness and durability. Blue Goldstone has a Mohs hardness of 6.5, which corresponds to the hardness of quartz.
The beginnings of Blue Goldstone’s history lie in Italy. In the 17th century, a glassmaker family named Miotto from Venice wanted to create stones that would be a world novelty. The process began with the production of Goldstone, a reddish-copper-colored glass, and was later expanded to include Blue Goldstone, Purple Goldstone, and Green Goldstone. To produce Blue Goldstone, a molten glass mixture is combined with coloring metal oxides, in this case, cobalt and manganese oxides. Italy was long considered the sole producer of Blue Goldstone until the recipe became known, and colored glass with metallic color effects was also produced in glassworks in Bohemia/Czech Republic and Bavaria.
