History of Campo del Cielo – the Field of the Sky:
The Campo del Cielo meteorite has a fascinating history dating back to the 16th century. In 1576, the Spanish governor Hernán Mexía de Miraval heard accounts from indigenous peoples of “iron that had fallen from the sky.” Curious, he sent out an expedition that indeed found several large fragments. The site, a water-scarce plain, was called “Piguem Nónaxá” and was named “Campo del Cielo” – “Field of the Sky” – by the Spanish conquistadors.
Scientific studies show that this meteorite is one of the largest iron meteorites ever discovered and originally weighed around 840 tonnes. The spectacular craters it left behind cover an area of more than 60 square kilometres and are striking evidence of the tremendous forces at work on impact. Analyses of the material indicate an extremely high iron and nickel content, characteristic of the oldest building blocks of our solar system.
Over the centuries, the Campo del Cielo meteorite has been not only an object of scientific research but also surrounded by myths and legends. Indigenous peoples regarded it as sacred and believed it was sent by the gods. Today, the meteorite continues to fascinate people around the world and offers a unique glimpse into the origins of the universe.
