History of Jasper Gemstone
Red Jasper, known for its protective and durable properties, has a fascinating and diverse history. Its name derives from the Latin “iaspis” via the Greek “ἴασπις” for “speckled stone,” a term that may have originally come from an oriental language, perhaps ancient Egyptian or Persian. In Hebrew, the stone’s name is “Jaspheh.”
The use of Red Jasper can be traced back to antiquity. Various civilizations used it for different reasons and beliefs. In ancient times, the stone was primarily used to make sharp weapons and hunting tools. The Egyptians carved Red Jasper into the shape of a scarab to symbolize eternal life, or into a snake shape to protect against bites. It was also placed on the deceased to facilitate their journey into the world of the dead. Native Americans crafted jewelry from the stone to protect themselves at night or to strengthen their health. In Greece and Rome, Red Jasper was associated with various deities. In Japan, it was used to make pendants that only high-ranking individuals were allowed to wear, and the Chinese, especially the imperial family, owned seals made of jasper. Christians saw it as the crystallized blood of Christ, and in Norse legends, it is associated with Siegfried’s sword.
Regarding its origin and composition, Red Jasper belongs to the large Jasper family, which in turn is part of the quartz family. The main chemical composition of red jasper is silicon dioxide (SiO2). It forms primarily in volcanic and/or sedimentary rocks. The main occurrences of red jasper are in Germany, Brazil, France, India, Madagascar, the USA, and the Urals. Its hardness is about 6.5 on the Mohs scale, making it a very durable gemstone.
In antiquity, jasper was a highly esteemed gemstone among the Greeks and Romans. In the Bible, it is mentioned as one of the foundation stones of the city wall of the Heavenly Jerusalem.
