Rhodonite owes its distinctive appearance to a special combination: its warm rosé tone comes from manganese, while the characteristic black veins and streaks consist of manganese oxide inclusions that run through the stone like a natural network. Chemically, rhodonite belongs to the group of chain silicate minerals with the formula (Mn,Fe,Ca)SiO₃ and reaches a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5, making it robust enough for everyday jewelry. Each donut displays its own pattern of rosé surfaces and dark markings, making no two pieces alike. The round donut shape emphasizes the soft color effect of rhodonite in a particularly harmonious way and sits comfortably on the skin. From Russian eagle stone to cherished heart stone
The name rhodonite derives from the Greek word “rhodon” (rose) and refers to its typical color. The mineral was first scientifically described in 1819 by German mineralogist Christoph Friedrich Jasche. Previously, the stone was known in the Urals as “Orletz” (eagle stone), as eagles allegedly carried small rhodonite pieces into their nests, which is why it was attributed a protective effect. In Tsarist Russia, rhodonite was so highly valued that it was used for magnificent vases, columns, and even the sarcophagus of Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg. Today, significant deposits come from Australia, Brazil, India, Madagascar, Sweden, and Tanzania.
Traditionally, rhodonite is associated with the heart chakra. It is said to gently heal emotional wounds and help recognize forgiveness as the key to inner peace.

What makes rhodonite so visually distinctive are the dendritic (tree-like) manganese oxide patterns that form during crystallization and give each stone a kind of natural fingerprint. Rhodonite is suitable for everyday wear with a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5, but should be protected from strong impacts, as the dark manganese oxide inclusions in particular can be somewhat more brittle than the pink base. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents, ultrasonic baths, and prolonged contact with acids. It’s best to store the donut in a soft pouch to avoid scratches from harder stones.
