Sea buckthorn fruit oil and sea buckthorn seed oil come from the same berry but differ fundamentally in composition and color. Fruit oil is extracted from the orange-red pulp and contains mainly palmitic acid and the rare palmitoleic acid – an omega-7 fatty acid that is hardly found in the plant world. It is also rich in carotenoids, which give it its characteristic deep red color. Simply mix the oils into your salad dressing or take them one after the other – your body processes the fatty acids regardless of the order.

Cold-pressed sea buckthorn pulp oil is sensitive to light, heat, and oxygen due to its high carotenoid content. After opening, store the bottle in the refrigerator and reseal it immediately after each use. Under these conditions, the oil generally remains fresh for three to six months and retains its valuable ingredients. A darkening of the color or a rancid smell indicates that the oil has oxidized and should no longer be used. The deep red color and the fruity-tart scent are reliable freshness indicators. Dark glass bottles offer additional protection against UV radiation.

The most important quality feature of sea buckthorn pulp oil is purity—the ingredients list should contain only sea buckthorn pulp, with no added carrier oils or additives. Cold pressing preserves heat-sensitive compounds like carotenoids and vitamin E far better than hot extraction. Organic certification guarantees no synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used in cultivation. Also pay attention to the color: high-quality pulp oil is a rich orange to deep red—pale yellow oil suggests seed oil or heavy dilution. Bottling in dark glass indicates a well-thought-out quality concept, as protection from light extends shelf life.

Pure sea buckthorn pulp oil is considered very well-tolerated and is also suitable for sensitive individuals. Allergic reactions are extremely rare, as sea buckthorn is not among the classic allergenic plants. If the recommended daily amount is significantly exceeded, the high carotenoid content can temporarily cause a slightly yellowish-orange discoloration of the skin – a harmless effect that disappears on its own after reducing the dose. External application to the skin is also safe, although the intense oil can permanently stain textiles.
